Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association meeting to be highlighted by Student Night

The Louisiana Tech University  Animal Science program, the Louisiana State University School of  Veterinary Medicine, and the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association  (LVMA) are collaborating as hosts of the upcoming Peter Haynes Memorial  Lectures event Sept. 18-20, featuring a Student Night for the first time  since the event’s inception.

The Student Night will take place on Sept. 18 and will be a  networking and learning opportunity for undergraduate pre-vet and  veterinary students and mentors. Attending students will be able to meet  with Equine and Large Animal Veterinarians as well as industry  partners, all with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Representatives  and speakers from veterinary schools at Oklahoma State University,  Texas A&M University, and Louisiana State University will share  their perspectives on the veterinary school experience in their  respective states. The topic of the night is “Careers in the Animal  Health Industry.”

In addition to Student Night, attendees will be able to hear over a  dozen lectures from five speakers over the course of the event. Topics  range from equine asthma to wooden shoes to the economic impact of  COVID-19 on the industry.

The equine-focused meeting is named in honor of the late Dr. Peter F.  Haynes, the former Dean of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. His  research was centered on equine surgery and sports medicine. The  continuing education event has been held annually in Bossier City for  nearly fifty years.

“The addition of a Student Night is just one of many ways this  meeting will benefit our Animal Science students,” said Louisiana Tech’s  Dr. Rebecca McConnico. “They’ll be learning from experts beyond those  we have on our campus, and they’ll be networking with potential future  employers.”

The Peter F. Haynes Memorial Lectures will be held Sept. 18-20 at the Horseshoe Casino and Hotel in Bossier City.
