National Science Foundation funds collaborative research between Louisiana Tech and Grambling

The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports research, innovation  and discovery that provides the foundation for economic growth in the  United States.

The National Science Foundation has awarded Louisiana Tech University $300,000.

The project that received this funding is entitled “IRES Track I:  Towards a Green and Self-Powered Internet of Things (IoT) using  Vibration Energy Harvesting,” is under the direction of Dr. Hamzeh  Bardaweel, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering &  Nanosystem Engineering.

Over the span of three years, 18 undergraduate students will be  recruited from two Louisiana institutions, Louisiana Tech University and  Grambling State University, to participate in international activities  at the University of Sheffield, UK.

During the six week stay at the University of Sheffield, students  will be engaged in research activities that are focused on raising  students’ awareness of potential applications and environmental impacts  of eco-friendly green energy harvesting systems.

Energy is a central focus of research within the College of  Engineering and this project will contribute to the field of green  energy generation by answering questions related to utilizing systems as  reliable eco-friendly power sources for IoT sensors.

“The outcomes from this project will have significant societal  impacts,” said Bardaweel. “Results from this project will help answer  fundamental questions about how it may be possible for greener solutions  to be used as power sources.”

The outcomes will be presented at the ASME-IMECE Undergraduate  Research and Design Exposition and two annual on-campus recruitment and  dissemination workshops at both Louisiana Tech and Grambling.
