Several fourth-year Louisiana Tech University Architecture students won the top two awards at the Gulf Coast Green Conference Student Competition in Houston in April. The event challenged students from various fields to design projects around the theme “Cycle: Where Ends Become Beginnings,” with five finalist teams, including those from Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M, presenting their work at the conference.
The Louisiana Tech teams developed their entries during a Winter Quarter sustainability studio, which focused on environmentally conscious designs for sites in Detroit. Juan Colorado, Alex Gibson, and Trey Smith earned first place and a $500 prize for their project. Connor Fonseca and Kyle Kieronski took second place and received a $250 prize.
As finalists, the students attended the conference to present their projects and participate in related events. Kevin J. Singh, Chair of the Louisiana Tech Architecture Program, said, “Not only did they win top honors in the competition, but they were also able to take part in conference sessions, network with architects, and learn from their fellow competitors. Overall, it was a great learning experience for these students.”
Members of the winning team said, “It was an honor to help represent Louisiana Tech University at the Gulf Coast Green Student Competition. This competition has opened our eyes to the potential that architecture has to revitalize communities, turn waste into resources, and generate opportunity. We appreciate our professors and classmates who supported us through the design process.”
Louisiana Tech’s Architecture program is ranked as the top program in Louisiana according to Niche.com.
