The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs clinched their seventh Conference USA series win of the season after defeating Sam Houston 8-2 at the Love Shack on May 15. The Diamond ‘Dogs improved their record to 33-22 overall and 19-10 in conference play, having now won 14 of their last 20 games.
This victory is significant as it highlights the team’s strong performance in league play during their final home weekend of the season. The game featured standout performances from Trey Hawsey and Wesley Scott, each hitting two home runs, marking only the second time this season that multiple Bulldogs have had multi-homer games.
Hawsey put LA Tech ahead early with his fourteenth homer of the year in the first inning and followed up with another in the third. Hudson Rowan started on the mound for LA Tech, pitching five innings while allowing just one unearned run and striking out five batters. After Sam Houston narrowed the lead to one run in the seventh inning, Scott responded with a leadoff home run to restore a two-run advantage for LA Tech.
Head Coach Lane Burroughs said, “I’m really proud of our guys. We talked about it in pregame how far we’ve come. I think, as 18- to 23-year-olds, they don’t realize it because they’re playing the game and in the moment. But as a veteran coach and a fan, we were in a bad place. We were 4-6 in league play on that Thursday before Easter, we were 15-16 overall. A lot of people left us for dead, but we still had breath… I couldn’t be prouder of the way our guys have played.” Burroughs also praised Rowan’s pitching effort and highlighted key contributions from other players including Landon Fontenot and Riley Fisher.
Friday’s contest was notable as only two previous occasions saw multiple Bulldogs hit multiple homers: once earlier this season against Houston Christian and previously on May 4, 2024 against New Mexico State.
Looking ahead, LA Tech will aim for a sweep against Sam Houston on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day celebrations at Love Shack.
