Louisiana Tech’s baseball team lost to Florida International University, 7-4, in a Conference USA game on April 2 at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami. The defeat extended the Bulldogs’ losing streak to eight games, marking their longest such stretch since 2014.
The ongoing losing streak highlights a challenging period for the Bulldogs as they try to regain momentum in conference play. The team had previously not lost this many consecutive games in over a decade.
FIU took an early lead with a leadoff home run but Louisiana Tech tied the score in the third inning after Colton Coates drove in Wesley Scott. By the seventh inning, LA Tech had built a 4-2 lead with key hits from Coates and Eli Berch. However, FIU responded with multiple runs later that inning and added another insurance run in the eighth.
Head Coach Lane Burroughs said, “It was a tough night. I thought Declan was outstanding. He settled in—the leadoff hitter ambushed him on a fastball up and he got it out of the yard, but after that I thought he was really good. He pitched well enough to win the ball game, and we didn’t get it done. Their starter was good, too. He’s got good numbers—it’s a Friday night, so you know you’ll face a good arm no matter who you’re playing. I thought our hitters did a good job with that two-spot in the seventh, and we go out and give it right back to them. It’s very disappointing, but we have to come back tomorrow and show back up and keep fighting. That’s our only option.”
Game two of the series is scheduled for April 3 at FIU Baseball Stadium.
